Donating blood not only is counted as one of the noblest deeds but is also a requirement for your very own well-being. The benefits of blood donation goes both ways – for the receiver and the donor. Since blood cannot be artificially manufactured hence patients depend on blood donors for their very lives. It is said that one blood donation can, at times, help up to 3 patients. Blood donation is a very safe process monitored by expert medical personnel yet only 10 % of the eligible donors actually do.
Blood Group and Types:
Blood is made up of red blood, white blood cells and platelets in a liquid called plasma. The blood group is identified by the antibodies and antigens present in your blood. Antigens are protein molecules found on the surface of red blood cells and antibodies are proteins found in the plasma. There are 4 main blood groups – A, B, AB and O, which is determined by the genes one inherits from their parents. Each group is denoted either with RhD Positive or RhD Negative, the + and – signs that accompany when the blood type is mentioned. This means that there are a total of 8 types of blood groups. The type of blood you carry is determined by the presence or absence of certain antigens. These antigens are substances in the body that can trigger an immune response if they are foreign to the body. Hence, a blood transfusion is done only after careful blood typing and cross-matching.
Blood Typing and Matching:
Here is a table depicting the compatibility between various blood groups and types:
||Can Donate To
||Can Receive From
||A+ A- O+ O-
||A+ A- AB+ AB-
||B+ B- O+ O-
||B+ B- AB+ AB-
||AB- A- B- O-
||O+ A+ B+ AB+
The Rh System:
The red blood cells sometimes have another antigen which is a protein known as the RhD antigen. It is the presence or absence of this antigen helps in classifying the blood group as positive or negative, respectively.
Benefits of Donating Blood:
- The body begins the work to replenish the blood after donation thus stimulating the production of new blood cells and helping in maintaining good health
- It helps in removing excess of iron content in the body, preventing heart and liver ailments.
- Donating blood boosts your social well-being because the process of being able to save lives cannot be compared to any other joy. The thought of helping someone or multiple people somewhere who are counting on you even though you would most probably never meet, gives a feeling of immense satisfaction.
